About the Portal

The USC Studio/Jazz Guitar Portal is a streamlined repository of editorialized information about important jazz guitarists. Experts in the field provide links to biographical, performance, and educational resources; and contextualize the important aspects of each artist’s music that added to the lexicon of the idiom. There is a strong emphasis on usable, accessible footage and descriptions to assist the student and scholar alike to gain a deeper insight into the elements of style, technique and development of the various artists.

About the USC Studio/Jazz Guitar Department

The USC Thornton studio/jazz guitar department is considered one of the finest guitar programs in the world, boasting a faculty of world-class touring and recording guitarists. Graduates include established artists and top touring sidemen with major recording artists, composers for film, television and other media, classical ensembles, music supervisors and world renowned teachers of music. They have performed with a diverse array of distinguished artists and ensembles including Chick Corea, Michael Buble, Manhattan Transfer, Mel Tormé, Ray Charles, Shadowfax, Jennifer Lopez, The Backstreet Boys and Jack McDuff. Under the guidance of the esteemed faculty, numerous award-winning USC guitar ensembles have performed throughout the world. Alumni include Paul Jackson Jr., Lee Ritenour, Andrew York, Richard Smith, Charles Altura and Larry Koonse.
